Abstract

Jalapeño pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) requires proper nutritional management to reach their agronomic potential; however, the intensive use of synthetic fertilizers can affect soil quality and the sustainability of the crop. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of two sources of organic fertilizers, poultry manure and cattle manure, applied at two rates, on the growth, flowering, and yield of jalapeño pepper in the Puembo area, Pujilí canton, Cotopaxi province, Ecuador. A randomized complete block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement plus a control was used, with four replicates. The treatments were poultry manure and cattle manure at rates of 1 and 2.5 kg/plant. Plant height, days to flowering, number of fruits per plant, fruit diameter, length, and weight were evaluated. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey’s test with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. It was found that treatment T2, poultry manure + 1 kg/plant, showed the best yield performance, with 43.70 fruits per plant, 4.02 cm in diameter, 9.10 cm in length, and 810.00 g in fruit weight; therefore, it is concluded that poultry manure applied at a moderate doses constitutes an efficient organic alternative for improving jalapeño pepper yield under the evaluated conditions.
