Agronomic and Economic Response of Brachiaria decumbens to Soil and Foliar Fertilizers in Cotopaxi, Ecuador

Abstract

Pasture productivity depends largely on nutritional management; therefore, the agronomic and economic evaluation of fertilizers is key to improving the efficiency of livestock systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil and foliar fertilizers on the growth, biomass, bromatological composition, and benefit/cost ratio of Brachiaria decumbens in Pangua, Cotopaxi, Ecuador. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design block design, with eight treatments and four replicates: DAP, ammonium sulfate, physical mixture, urea, Cytokin®, zinc, Cytokin® + zinc, and absolute control. Plant height and leaf length were evaluated at 15, 30, and 45 days; fresh and dry biomass at 45 days; bromatological parameters and benefit-to-cost ratio. The results showed significant differences between treatments in height starting at 30 days and in leaf length throughout the entire evaluation period. Urea achieved the greatest height at 45 days, while DAP exhibited the greatest leaf length, fresh biomass, dry biomass, and benefit-to-cost ratio. The physical mixture showed intermediate performance, with economic balance, while ammonium sulfate, Cytokin®, zinc, and Cytokin® + zinc exhibited more limited productive and economic responses. The bromatological analysis complemented the interpretation, although it was descriptive. It is concluded that DAP and urea were the most efficient alternatives under the evaluated conditions, providing useful evidence to guide fertilization programs in tropical pastures.
