Abstract

En la explotación porcina se manifiesta variabilidad en el peso que los cerdos alcanzan al destete, lo cual es normal; sin embargo, siempre se considera que los animales que logran los mayores pesos al destete logran mejores rendimientos económicos y que si se manifiesta compensación en los de peso ligero, ésta no logra hacer que los animales rindan igual que los más pesados. Sesenta cerdos comerciales, de ambos sexos, destetados a los 21 días de edad correspondientes a tres categorías de peso se emplearon en un ensayo para determinar el rendimiento en los períodos inmediatos post-destete (Pre-Inicio, Inicio y Crecimiento I). Se implementó los siguientes tratamientos: T1, peso de destete por encima de los 7 kilos; T2, peso de destete entre 6 y 7 kilos; T3, peso de destete menor a los 6 kilos. Si bien los resultados mostraron que los cerdos del tratamiento 1 consumieron más alimento y lograron mayor peso vivo (P≤0.05), la conversión alimenticia y el mérito económico favorecieron a los tratamientos 2 y 3. Siendo recomendable realizar estudios que sean llevados hasta la obtención del peso de mercado para determinar si los cerdos de peso ligero al destete representarían ventaja económica dentro de la explotación.
