Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the sex ratio of Huacaya alpacas at three
different times: At birth, 8 months of age and at one year of age. The study was carried out at
the Quimsachata research station headquarters of the germplasm bank of colored alpacas
and llamas of the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA) located in the district of
Santa Lucia province of Lampa department of Puno, Peru, at an altitude of 4190 m.a.s.l. in
the agro-ecological zone of the dry puna. For this study, the productive records of Huacaya
alpacas from the period 2005-2015 were used. The data were analyzed using the Chi-square
test using the SAS version 9.4 statistical program. The results indicate a total of 3961
Huacaya alpacas born in the period 2005-2015, of which 1989 alpacas were female (50.21%)
and 1972 were males (49.79%), the difference of these percentages being not significant. (p>
0.05). At 8 months of age, a total of 3656 Huacaya alpacas were observed, of which 1862
(50.93%) were female and 1794 (49.07%) were male, with the difference of the percentages
not significant (p> 0.05). The population of one-year-old Huacaya alpacas of the study period
was 3409 of which 1731 (50.78%) were female and 1678 (49.22%) were male, the difference
of the percentages being not significant (p≥0.05). It is concluded that the sex ratio at birth, 8
months of age and one year of age of the Huacaya alpaca population of the INIA germplasm
bank is 1: 1.

1. INTRODUCCIÓN
A nivel mundial el Perú, presentó la mayor
población de alpacas con el 83.75% en el
ámbito nacional con 3’685,500. (INEI
2012), la mayor población de alpacas se
encuentra en la región de Puno con 51.99%.
La problemática productiva a nivel de las
comunidades campesinas y pequeños
criadores, es el resultado del uso de un
conjunto de recursos limitados y escasos,
como es la estructura de la composición del
rebaño en Alpacas por clase animal,
llevando a una deficiencia en el manejo
(FAO 2005).
Tanto en monta natural como en
inseminación artificial (IA), la proporción
de sexos en las crías es 50% machos y 50%
hembras (Callesen et al., 1996). El objetivo
de este estudio fue evaluar la proporción de
sexo en la Alpaca Huacaya al nacimiento,
destete y al año de edad.
2. MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS

El presente estudio fue realizado en el
Centro de Investigación y Producción
Quimsachata, del Instituto Nacional de
Innovación Agraria, ubicado entre los
distritos de Santa Lucia y Cabanillas de las
Provincias de Lampa y San Román,
respectivamente, en la región Puno, a una
altitud promedio de 4 190 m.s.n.m.
2.2. Recolección de los datos
Los datos para determinar la proporción de
sexo en alpacas, se obtuvieron de los
registros productivos del CIP -Quimsachata
(Tabla 1).
